About

The NIH Cardiovascular Repository for Type 1 Diabetes (CaRe-T1D) was created to improve research on type 1 diabetes (T1D) and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Cardiovascular complications remain the top cause of death among people with T1D and greatly shorten lifespan. The mechanisms underlying atherosclerosis, cardiomyopathy, endothelial dysfunction, and cardiac autonomic neuropathy in T1D remain poorly understood. While managing traditional risk factors—such as high blood glucose, high blood pressure, and elevated cholesterol lower cardiovascular risk, a significant residual risk remains even with optimal control. In addition to atherosclerosis, both diastolic and systolic diabetic cardiomyopathy play a major role in morbidity and mortality among these patients. Currently, no therapies are specifically approved to prevent or treat these common and severe cardiovascular issues in T1D. The purpose of this NOFO is to promote collaborative and interdisciplinary research aimed at enhancing the understanding of the development of CVD in individuals with T1D and the differences with CVD in T1D by continuing the efforts of the CaRe-T1D consortium. This NOFO is associated with the Special Diabetes Program (https://www. niddk. nih. gov/about-niddk/research-areas/diabetes/type-1-diabetes-special-statutory-funding-program/about-special-diabetes-program) which funds research on the prevention, treatment, and cure of type 1 diabetes and its complications, including unique, innovative, and colla.

The Continuation of the Cardiovascular Repository for Type 1 Diabetes (CARE-T1D) Consortium U01 grant supports collaborative, interdisciplinary research aimed at understanding cardiovascular disease (CVD) development in individuals with type 1 diabetes (T1D). This grant is designed for research institutions, universities, and qualified organizations seeking to advance knowledge about the mechanisms underlying atherosclerosis, cardiomyopathy, endothelial dysfunction, and cardiac autonomic neuropathy in T1D populations. Researchers should apply if they are investigating why cardiovascular complications remain the leading cause of death among T1D patients, even when traditional risk factors like high blood glucose, blood pressure, and cholesterol are well-controlled. The grant funds research that addresses the significant residual cardiovascular risk in T1D and explores why current therapies fail to prevent or treat these severe complications. This is an exceptional opportunity for research teams committed to closing critical gaps in T1D cardiovascular science and developing innovative solutions that could ultimately extend lifespans and improve quality of life for millions of T1D patients. Funding is supported through the NIH's Special Diabetes Program, which prioritizes unique and collaborative approaches to diabetes prevention, treatment, and cure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is eligible for the CARE-T1D Consortium U01 grant?

Eligible applicants must be domestic U.S. organizations or U.S.-based components of international organizations. Non-domestic (non-U.S.) entities and non-domestic components of U.S. organizations are not eligible to apply. Foreign components as defined in the NIH Grants Policy Statement are permitted. For complete eligibility requirements, refer to Section III of the official Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) on the NIH website.

How much funding does the CARE-T1D Consortium U01 grant provide?

Funding ranges from N/A to $500,000. The specific amount awarded may vary based on the scope of the proposed research and funding availability in each cycle. Applicants should refer to the official NOFO for current budget guidelines and limitations.

How do I apply for the CARE-T1D Consortium U01 grant?

Applications must be submitted through the official NIH grants portal. Applicants should review the complete Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) for detailed application instructions, required forms, and submission procedures. The application deadline is March 10, 2027. Visit the NIH website or contact your institution's grants office for specific guidance on preparing and submitting your application.

What can CARE-T1D Consortium U01 funding be used for?

Funding supports collaborative and interdisciplinary research that enhances understanding of cardiovascular disease development in type 1 diabetes patients. This includes research on atherosclerosis, diabetic cardiomyopathy, endothelial dysfunction, and cardiac autonomic neuropathy. Research must aim to explain why cardiovascular complications persist despite optimal management of traditional risk factors. Note: Clinical trials are not allowed under this funding mechanism.
